A short game made for gmtk 2025. Mancarda is a game played on a looping track and was based off of the game Mancala.

The bot may be a little buggy for now, but feedback and bug reports would be appreciated!

Mancarda(Mancala + Cards):

Mancala is the generic name for a group of games found in ancient Africa and Asia. Even though they differ in names, boards and rules, the strategy is pretty much the same. This game was based off of one of the more popular variations of the game.

Mancarda uses the board, rules of movement, and objective that Mancala had but adds a twist with cards that change the board and strategy of the game.

Rules:

Objective: collect the most orbs before your opponent clears their side of the board.

Play: Players alternate turns. On any given turn you:

  • Play as many cards as you want, paying the energy cost listed in the bottom corner
  • You must move once by picking up a pile of orbs and placing each piece around the board in a counterclockwise direction from the original cup
    • If your final orb ends in your Mancarda (the large cup at the end of your side of the board), then you must move again, following the same rules
    • If your final orb lands on an empty space on your side of the board and your opponent has at least one piece directly in the opposite cup, pickup both your orb and all the orbs in your opponents cup and place them in your Mancarda

To Win: the game is over when one person has no more orbs on their side of the board. The remaining orbs go into their opponents Mancarda. Winner is whoever has more orbs in their Mancarda.

Deck:

A list of the cards and their statistics are in the how to play tab of the game, however a card's effect can be shown by clicking on it once in-game

Never played nor heard of mancala so it took me a few minutes to pick it up. There's for sure a lot of strategy for this, along with the cards, very cool. I think some more visual cues would help it a lot, especially for noobs like me. Like when you hover over a pile of orbs, it shows what would happen if you were to use that pile. And maybe have it quickly animate putting the orbs one by one.
